Elspeth May
I get alongside people, to see the world from their perspective and help explore all the possibilities open to them. I see myself as a supporter and confidante, also challenging my clients to do those things that will really make a difference to their effectiveness.
Experience
Elspeth’s first career was as a chartered accountant. After qualifying in 1976, she progressed through audit and tax practices within Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co., later KPMG, becoming a Partner in 1990. While heading up the firm’s Personal Financial Services practice in the UK, she worked with many senior directors and business owners on strategy, succession planning and financial planning. Within KPMG she had responsibility at various times for marketing, human resources and assessing potential partners’ capability.
During this time, she became a non-executive director of a promotional company, gaining first-hand experience of strategy development and managing the board’s performance. After leaving KPMG and then working as a consultant for a brief period, she joined The Change Partnership as a director and coach in 2001.
Her approach is to clarify at the outset what would be a successful outcome for the client, and for their organisation, in the coaching and other work which she does with them. A perceptive coach, she is good at getting to the heart of issues and keeping her clients focused on what really matters.
With over 30 years experience in business, Elspeth has worked with organisations of all shapes and sizes and in most sectors. This rich experience continues in her coaching work where she has coached senior people in retail, manufacturing, transport, health, energy, Government and financial services. She takes a keen interest in the way organisations are defining their leadership qualities and is no longer surprised at the number of people who tell her they worry about when they are going to be “found out”.
Professional Expertise
As well as coaching senior businessmen and women across all sectors of the private and public domains, Elspeth is an experienced assessor. She has also conducted board and top team reviews, together with 360º feedback exercises for senior people.
