Power is given, influence is earned. Leaders and Boards are sometimes reticent to use the former and find it hard to win the latter. Yet the exercise of both power and influence is needed to gain support for themselves and their ideas, keep others on-side and make things happen. Most of my coaching is about helping talented clients get this right.
I have worked with more than 200 senior executives, teams and boards who want to make a difference to their organisations and, through them, to the communities and societies in which they play a part.
My best work is done with people and teams who are interested in how things could be; have the scope to do things differently and the courage to try; are thoughtful and considered; and can act fast when the opportunity arises. My job is to help them succeed, personally and professionally.
I have worked with CEO’s of listed companies, private companies and public agencies; high potential senior managers on their way to the top; and executives holding most functional jobs in between.
The work we do together generates insights that enable clients to re-frame things; to become more of who they are, not less; to bring their whole selves into the work place; and to skillfully deploy a wider set of leadership tools and techniques to get better results.
I engage with an executive team to help it focus on its core purpose; use the talents, skills, experience and knowledge of all its members to best effect; enable its members to collaborate constructively so as to get a great result; and to stay connected to the wider environment of which it is a part.
I conduct independent board reviews for private sector and public sector organisations, using a pragmatic, tailored, structured approach that pulls together directors’ practical experience of the way their board works and our own insight of best practice, all in the context of relevant governance codes.
I’m married with three adult children. An active local community plus a few acres, dogs, horses and a small flock of sheep keep me busy out of work. My wife and I also spend time in Switzerland, where we have a second home.

In his corporate career, he worked at company, corporate centre and industry level in roles including group executive director of a $5bn international insurance company; and non-executive director and Chairman of a venture-capital backed technology business.
